Leo responded, and the first run of single-pickup Musicmasters was ready in early May of 1956.ĭubbed “¾ instruments,” Musicmasters had much shorter scale lengths and other features intended to make them attractive to a younger, more frugal student player. Often forgotten amongst Fender’s classic line of vintage electric guitars, the definitive (and diminutive) Musicmaster and Duo-Sonic student-grade models were conceived to capitalize on the fact teenagers were taking up the guitar in droves as Bill Haley and the Comets’ “Rock Around the Clock” rode the Billboard charts for 10 weeks in the summer of 1955.įender’s Sales division was acutely aware at the time that nobody would be using a Champion lap steel to try and emulate Danny Cedrone’s guitar solo, so it asked company president Leo Fender – known for his ability to devise a new product in as little as three months – to round out their Spanish-guitar offering with the two beginner models. In order to obtain optimal low action, a full refret would likely be necessary. There the action is set a bit on the high side to accommodate for the low frets. The fingerboard shows plenty of wear consistent with age, and the original frets show considerable wear. Neck: Deep V/U shaped solid maple neck with black side dots, black dot inlays, and walnut skunk stripe. The body was routed for a humbucker at some point (see photos).
The string grommets are original as well, though the tuners themselves have been changed to contemporary reproductions.īody: Offset solid alder body refinished in white with original bridge and saddles. The frets and fingerboard show wear consistent with age, but the finish on the neck is original. The body has been routed and refinished in white.
The original alder body has been refinished in white, and all the electronics have been replaced, bit the bridge & saddles are original.Ĭosmetic condition: Good honest wear throughout-various scratches, dents, dings, nicks, chips, and scuffs present, with areas of finish wear and finish checking throughout. It boasts a maple neck in spectacular original condition with original fretwork and finish, and a deep V/U carve that is super comfortable. This piece plays great as is, but is a fantastic candidate for restoration as well. Classic sound and feel at a more than affordable price.
